What is wrong? The error indicates a problem with the cutter or the peripheral device board that controls it. Normal printing should resume. In cases where the error cannot be cleared, check the peripheral device settings under System Parameters and make sure that the correct cutter module has been selected.

Printer will automatically re-initialize after selection is made. Also see notes under error I am getting a Head Fault error code on my printer, and cannot print. Opening and closing of the print head on these machines is a manual operation. Make sure that the print head is fully lowered and locked into position.

On these printers, movements of the print head are controlled by a head stepper motor. For the AP7. What might cause error ?

The error indicates that the printer has been unable to detect the presence of a ribbon. What do the error messages in the group indicate? One or another of the errors in this group may occur following a bus device error. For details, see notes on error code The specific code isolates both the type of problem that the printer encountered and the particular system device that was the source of the trouble. Each system device is assigned a number, which also appears as part of the informational message.

See the Device Table below for details. The errors in this group will appear on the LCD display somewhat as follows: The device number assignments for the xx, AP4. All errors in the group disable printer functionality. Printer must be turned off, and re-initialized. I am able to print labels on my Avery-Dennison printer, but the printing is too light or too dark.

My labels seem to be sliding off to the right side of the printer away from the main printer wall. Since the Avery-Dennison AP 4. How can I restore my Avery-Dennison printer to its original factory settings? After doing a factory reset, make sure that the Print Head Resistance Value is reset and that any required peripheral device options are turned on.

The MLI emulation must be used in association with an appropriate printer driver, and must be activated on the printer front panel. The front panel setup procedure follows: Once the MLI emulation is active, it is necessary to do a paper sensor calibration.

On AP5. How do I calibrate the paper sensor on my AP5. Before beginning the calibration, make sure that labels and ribbon if required are already loaded in the printer, and that, in the case of the AP5.

My Avery-Dennison printer is printing fine, but the label material stops right at the edge of the print head and so cannot be easily torn off. The procedure is as follows: How do I activate peripheral devices like cutters for my Avery printer? Cutters, applicators, and other peripheral devices that are attached to the printer must be turned on using the printer's peripheral device menu.

The procedure follows: Part 1. Windows Print Driver. Applicable Conditions: Installation Procedure: Before beginning, make sure that you have the Windows print driver folder either on a CD-ROM or downloaded to a folder on your computer. Part 2. Special Driver Considerations. Before setting up your printer on UPS Worldship, it may be necessary to modify a small number of driver settings.

The primary elements to consider are these: Part 3. The printer currently being used by the UPS software will be shown under Label Printer, and the label size currently in use will be listed under Label Stock Dimensions. Make note of the dimensions listed there if you are planning to retain the existing size with the new driver. Before continuing, also make note of any checkboxes that are required for your label setup.

Verify that all the settings are correct. Visual inspection of the position of the paper sensor is easy to do on the Eagle printer. Arrows printed on the surface of the paper sensor identify the locations of both the gap and black mark sensors: Since Century Eagle printers are center-fed, it is a good practice to locate the paper sensor at or near the center of your label stock.

Hence, ths first thing to check is the label format itself to make sure that there are no problems with the graphics including True Type fonts that may be used as part of the design. I am able to print labels on my Century Eagle printer, but the printing is too light or too dark.

For full width ribbons, the cores on the feed and take-up spindles should be pushed up against the green ribbon stoppers. For narrower ribbons, the ribbon must be centered on the two ribbon spindles.

Century Falcon 8 Printer. Visual inspection of the position of the paper sensor is easy to do on the Falcon 8 printer. Since Century Falcon 8 printers are center-fed, it is a good practice to locate the paper sensor at or near the center of your label stock. Check to be sure that the ribbon you are using is a flat print head ribbon compatible with the Century Falcon 8 printer. Make sure that the ribbon you are using is loaded 'coated side out'. The ribbon will unroll from the back side of the feed spindle and roll up on the front side of the take-up spindle.

Verify that the notches on the left side of each ribbon core are fully engaged with the ribbon motor gears, so that the cores do not slip when the gears turn.

Correction of this problem requires that the printer be serviced. I am able to print labels on my Century Falcon 8 printer, but the printing is too light or too dark.

Since the Falcon 8 printer uses a flat print head, it is important that a ribbon designed for this type of head is loaded on the machine. The ribbon should also be compatible with the labels or tags that are being printed. The default darkness is 'zero', which in this case defines average darkness under typical print conditions. Excessive wear or accumulations of ribbon or label residue on the platen roller.

The pressure across the top of the print head may not be even. Raise or lower the pressure lever on the left side of the print block depending on the relative width of the material being printed. A worn platen roller can produce a similar effect.

Check the platen roller for signs of wear. Verify that the notches on the left side of each ribbon core are fully engaged with the ribbon motor gears. Eight-inch wide labels need a eight-inch ribbon; six-inch labels a six-inch ribbon; and so on. Trying to print a six-inch wide label with a eight-inch ribbon will inevitably cause wrinkling of the ribbon. Century Falcon 4D Plus Printer. LED Error Messages. Vertical Shifting of Label Designs. Software and Communication Issues. USB Connection. Julian Dates. Types of Ribbon. Manuals and other Resources. I have loaded labels in my Falcon 4D Plus, but when I try to print, the status light turns red, the printer sounds two beeps twice and will not run. Several different conditions may cause this particular difficulty. Check the paper path to make sure that there are no obstructions. Make sure that the sensor is positioned so that it can detect the label gap, notch, or black mark.

The paper sensor is located at the front of the printer, just behind the platen roller, and can be moved from the center of the printer to the far left side.

Check to make sure that the label height dimension is correctly set for the label you are using. If the height dimension in the software is set for less than the actual label height, the printer will respond with this particular error. When I try to print labels on the Falcon 4D Plus, the status light turns red, and the printer sounds three beeps twice.

What is the problem? Make certain that you are using the right type of ribbon for the printer. The Century Falcon 4D Plus uses a flat print head. Consequently a ribbon designed specifically for flat print heads should be employed. In addition, the Falcon 4D Plus requires that the ribbon be wound 'coated side out'.

Check to be sure that the ribbon spindles are fully engaged with the gears on the left side of the print block, and that the right side of each spindle is locked into position. I cannot get my Falcon 4D Plus to print. The status light is red and the printer sounds four beeps twice. What do I need to do? This error indicates that the printer has detected a head open condition.

Check to make sure that the print block is fully latched down. The printer's head open switch is located on the right side of the machine. With the print head open, you should be able to see the metal tab for the switch just inside the right side plastic casing. If the metal tab is missing or damaged, you will need to have the switch replaced. My Falcon 4D Plus had been working fine, but all of a sudden the red status light has come on, and the printer has stopped running.

There are no beeping sounds at all. Your printer is probably OK, but you will not be able to use it immediately. This error indicates that the print head temperature is too high for operation and needs to cool down. Turn the printer off and allow it sufficient time to cool before restarting it. If the error cannot be cleared, there may be a more serious problem with the printer, which will require having the machine serviced. The status light on my Falcon 4D Plus is flashing red, and I cannot get rid of the error even if I turn off the machine and restart it.

Sometimes the green 'ready' light will come on for just a moment, but then the status light will begin blinking again. The problem here has to do with the power supply adapter device for your printer. With the printer plugged in and turned on, take a look at the top side of the power adapter. The side with the silver label is the bottom.

If the power adapter is working properly, the green light on the top of the unit should burn steadily. If the green light is blinking or seems to be fading, then the power supply is bad and needs to be replaced. Of course, if there is no green light at all on the power supply, then your printer will not power up at all. In this case, check to make sure that the adapter is in fact plugged in both on the power supply and at the wall or power strip.

You might also try plugging into a different outlet just to be sure where the problem lies. The status light on my Falcon 4D Plus is solid amber, and no matter what I do, the printer is unresponsive.

How can I get my printer running again? While this problem can be fixed, it requires the intervention of a service technician. Call Century Systems technical support department for repair assistance. Although I can print labels on my Falcon 4D Plus printer, the images are too light or too dark.

The effective bonding temperature of ribbons varies according to their chemical composition, and so their ability to adhere to different types of surfaces also varies. In addition, if you are using a Windows driver, you may also need to check the temperature setting there as well.

A setting around '10' is usually good for mid-range print applications. My labels seem to be sliding off to the right or left sides of the printer.

This problem can occur for a number of reasons. The Falcon 4D Plus printer is center justified, so label stock must always run down the middle of the machine.

Media rolls easily center themselves on the curvature of the media holder. The two media guides on the printer base should be moved so that they are positioned just along the outside edge of the label material. This arrangement should be sufficient to keep the label track straight.

I am able to print on my Falcon 4D Plus, but the text does not seem to be printing in the right position on the label too high or too low or appears to drift gradually in a vertical direction. I am not getting any error messages from the printer. How can I correct this problem? The most common cause of this difficulty is an incorrect sensor setting in the software. Check to make sure that the sensor type selected in your software is appropriate for the type of stock you are running.

In addition, if you are using a Windows driver, it may be necessary to check the sensor setting there as well. When I print labels, one or more lines of text or graphics near the top or bottom edge of the label is missing. Is the printer losing the data I am sending?

Actually the printer is in a sense 'editing' the data. This problem will occur if the label height dimension in your software is set higher than the actual label dimension.

Check to make sure that your label size is correctly defined. No printing at all: Is the print head cable plugged in? Sharply defined vertical white lines or rectangles: Uneven contrast from left to right across the print head: There are several possible causes for this sort of problem, the most common of which are: Of these three, the first one can usually be resolved by increasing or decreasing the relative pressure on the left or right sides of the print head.

Otherwise, a resolution of the problem will likely require repair work. Irregular white lines in print: Check that the two ribbon spindles are solidly anchored on both the left and right hand sides of the printer.

Four-inch wide labels need a four-inch ribbon; three-inch labels a three-inch ribbon; and so on. How do I calibrate the printer's paper sensor? The Falcon 4D Plus is capable of detecting the type of paper stock using a function called 'Auto Sensing'. The procedure for running this sensor calibration follows: Start with the printer turned off. Make sure that labels and ribbon if being used are loaded in the printer.

Press and hold the FEED key while turning on the printer. The printer will run a short routine to measure the label. How can I solve this? As a rule, one of the following sorts of changes will be required: Q Label. After completing the C Label installation, make sure that you select the correct print head resolution for the Falcon 4D Plus. Any labels that were previously created in Q Label can be opened in C Label.

Labelview and other programs with embedded drivers. For programs like Labelview, follow the normal procedure for installing a new driver. Make sure that you connect the newly installed driver to the appropriate USB port before you close out of the installation window.

Bar Tender, Nice Label, and other Windows programs. Software programs that utilize Windows print drivers can be handled in one of two ways: The second approach is probably the better option, since Windows will put the driver on the correct USB port without user intervention.

When I create labels with C Label, all the dimensions are in millimeters. Can I change the setup so that everything is in inches? To change the unit of measurement in C Label, follow these steps: Go to the Advance menu and highlight 'Control'. In the 'Control' submenu, highlight 'Unit of Measurement'. Select 'inch' from the last submenu. How would I set up a Julian date format in C Label? The process of setting up a Julian date format involves two general steps. The first step is to change the C Label date format itself.

To do this, follow the procedure below: Click OK to exit the dialog box. The second step will be to create a label that contains a Julian format. Once you have opened a new or existing label format, proceed as follows to add the date format to the label: Go to the Draw menu and click on 'Text'. This will open the Multi-Text Setup window. In the Text Setup box, click on the dropdown arrow next to the 'Insert' button.

Select 'Date' and then click OK. The letters 'jj' will appear on your label design to stand in for the Julian date. Can C Label be used with a database? C Label is able to access database information either by a dbf file connection or by an ODBC connection. Further details on working with databases can be found on the C Label Help menu.

C-Label IV is available in two editions: Standard and Special. The Special edition is recommended if you do not require database connectivity or if you have system applications that depend on older versions of the Borland Database Engine. What kinds of ribbon can I use on the Falcon 4D Plus? The Falcon 4D Plus uses ribbons designed for flat print heads, and must be wound coated side out. The Falcon 4D Plus should be run with a cardboard ribbon core on both the feed and take-up spindles.

For discussions of particular ribbon-related problems, see Darkness or Lightness of Print and Ribbon Wrinkle. Where can I obtain manuals or other documentation for the Falcon 4D Plus printer? If you do not already have the software and the instructions, you can download them from our web site. Installation of the high speed serial converter and port driver must be done sequentially. If you have questions prior to installation, please contact Century Systems Technical Support.

If you are using label software that requires use of a Windows driver, make sure that you install the necessary printer driver. I cannot find any Falcon 4D drivers in Q Label. Do I need to use a Windows driver in order to print? All of the drivers that you need for your Falcon printer are already part of the Q Label package, so you do not need to install anything else. Which Q Label driver name you choose depends on the type of Falcon you have. When I create labels with Q Label, all the dimensions are in millimeters.

To change the unit of measurement in Q Label, follow these steps: How would I set up a Julian date format in Q Label? The first step is to change the Q Label date format itself. In order for Julian dates to print out on an actual label, you must have a Falcon 4D printer with at least firmware version 1. Can Q Label be used with a database? Q Label is able to access database information either by a dbf file connection or by an ODBC connection.

Auto Sensing. I have loaded labels in my Falcon Plus, but I am getting an error message, 'Out of media or check media gap sensor'. Check the paper path to make sure that the stock is passing through the paper sensor. It is possible on this printer to load the paper so that it goes over top of the entire sensor assembly.

If the paper is installed in this way, the paper sensor will not be able to detect it. Check whether the paper sensor is positioned so that it can detect the label gap, notch, or black mark. The sensor has a distinctive white arrow on it visible when the print head is open that identifies the location of the sensor.

This arrow should be placed so that it will always be able to see the gap, notch, or black mark on your label stock. I have ribbon and labels loaded in my Falcon Plus, but when I try to print I get an error message that reads 'Check paper setting'. What could be wrong? Check the ribbon path to make sure that it is not routed through the paper sensor. I have installed direct thermal stock in my printer, but I am getting an 'Out of ribbon or check ribbon sensor' error.

Since I am not using ribbon anyway, why would this error occur? I am getting a 'print head is opened' error on my Falcon Plus, even though the print head is closed. The print head must be fully latched in order to enable printing. Make sure that the two prongs on the bottom of the green print head lever are fully inserted into the two holes on the lower print block support plate.

In addition the top portion of the print head lever should be flush with the side plate of the upper print block. Some of my labels print out with text fields missing. Bar codes print OK, but not the text, and I get an error, 'Filename not found'. What is the cause of this error? This error most commonly results from an incorrect graphics setting for True Type fonts in the label software.

The basic solution involves altering the driver setup to clear the printer memory after each print job. For details on how to implement these changes for selected software packages, see the white paper Century Falcon 4: Also see Downloading Fonts and Graphics. Why am I getting a 'Filename is repeated' error when I try to download a graphic to my Falcon Plus printer?

The printer is letting you know that a graphic using the same name as the one you are currently trying to download is already present on the printer. Falcon Plus printers cannot overwrite existing file names, so you must change the name of the file on your computer if you want to retry the download.

Although I can print labels on my Falcon Plus printer, the images are too light or too dark. The Century Falcon Plus printers use a flat print head. In addition the green media supply guide should be pushed up against the label roll, so that the labels cannot move away from the media holder plate.

As labels pass under the print block, the label edge closest to the wall of the printer should just touch the metallic guide on the lower side of the guide plate. The guide should be moved along the metal plate until it just touches the outside edge of the label stock.

I am able to print on my Falcon Plus, but the text does not seem to be printing in the right position on the label too high or too low or appears to drift gradually in a vertical direction. Is the print head fully plugged into the adapter board? Of these three, the first one can usually be resolved by repositioning the pressure toggles above the print head, sliding them more to the left or right as needed.

Since the Falcon Plus printers are left justified, the ribbon cores should always be positioned so that they are flush with the ribbon stoppers. When I print labels, only every other label prints out and the text appears to be shifted vertically on the label. There are no error messages. Is something wrong with my paper sensor? No, your paper sensor is probably normal. Label skipping occurs if the label height dimension in your software is set higher than the actual label dimension. Check to make sure that your label size is correctly defined in your software.

Related Problem. A different sort of difficulty occurs if the label height dimension is set lower than the actual label dimension. In this case, each label will print, but the design will be shifted toward the leading edge of the label. For general information on sensor calibration on Falcon Plus printers, see Auto Sensing below. C Label is a free label design software package that comes with all Falcon Plus printers. The software package is required in order to download label designs to the printer.

The Falcon is thus enabled to store labels so that it can be used independently of a direct computer connection. The Special Edition is also recommended for usage with Falcon stand-alone applications.

For additional details, see Database Information. Since Q Label software does not have a true USB communication option available, it cannot be used to transmit data to the Falcon 4 Plus. To solve this problem, simply install the C Label software program that comes with the Falcon 4 Plus, and set the communication type to USB. After completing the C Label installation, make sure that you select the correct print head resolution for the Falcon 4 Plus.

Keep in mind too that any elements of a label design that you downloaded to your old Falcon will need to re-loaded onto the new Falcon Plus. You can install either a Falcon 4 driver, or Falcon 4 Plus, if available. The basic procedure for downloading a label to the Falcon Plus is fairly simple.

However, if the label design contains any graphics or True Type fonts, these must be downloaded to the printer separately. To see screen shots of the download process, see Falcon 4 Plus Download Procedure. Downloading a True Type font is usually most easily done during the process of creating a new label, if this is the first time that you are using the desired font.

It is generally most convenient to download a complete font set such as Arial , rather than a singular font size such as Arial 10 point. Make sure that your printer is turned on and that either your parallel cable or USB cable is attached.

The steps for doing the download follow: Go to the File menu and click on 'Printer Setup'. Select the appropriate print port, then click OK. Input a data string in the box that says 'Data'. Click OK. The new font will be downloaded to the printer.

You will see a progress bar appear on your computer screen. When it finishes, you should hear a single beep from the printer, indicating that the download has been received.

The name of your new font will appear in the Multi-Text Setup box. The data string will appear on the new label and will be ready to print. Downloading a graphic to the printer can also be done at the time a label is being created. It is accomplished in the following way: On the Draw menu, click on 'Graphic'. This will open the Graphic dialog box. Open the graphics file that you wish to add to the label. The chosen graphic will then appear in the Graphic dialog box. Select the type of halftoning you want to use for the image, and make any adjustments to the image height and width, if required.

Click on the dropdown arrow next to the 'Download Graphic' button and select 'Download this Graphic to External Memory'. The software will ask you to provide a name for the graphic file. You can use either the default name which should reflect whatever name you gave the graphic on your computer or you can select a new name.

C-Label will let you know that the download is completed. Click OK in the Download window. The printer will beep once to confirm the download. When the download is completed, click OK to close the graphic box. The graphic will appear on the new label and will be ready to print. Once any True Type fonts and graphics have been downloaded to the printer, the label design itself can then be downloaded as well.

Go to the Advance menu. Highlight 'Download' in the submenu. In the next submenu, highlight 'Label' and then select 'Quick Download to Printer'. The software will ask you for a file name. You can use the default name which will be the same as the file name in C Label or you can choose a new name. Can True Type fonts or graphics be downloaded to the Falcon Plus printers even if I am not creating a label design? True Type fonts or graphics can be downloaded to the printer at any time by using the submenus under Advance in C Label.

However, keep in mind that in the case of True Type fonts, only one single font type, size, and style can be downloaded at a time. For True Type fonts: Go to the Advance menu and hightlight 'Download'. In the Font dialog box, choose the font, style, and size that you wish to download, and click OK.

A progress bar will appear on your computer screen.
